Manchester United entered the Europa League the last 16 games following a 0-0 home draw with Real Sociedad on Thursday, which on Thursday won a 4-0 overall victory over the Spanish side in the round of 16.

With an eye on Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started striker Marcus Rashford and defender Harry Maguire on the bench.

Sociedad missed a 13th-minute penalty as Mikel Oyarzabal gave a wide kick before a lethargic United came to life and Bruno Fernandes rocked the crossbar with a 15-yard deflected shot.

Modibo Sagnan hit Sociedad wood with a header from close range shortly after the break before United substitute Axel Tuanzebe had a goal disallowed for Victor Lindelof’s foul on Jon Bautista.

Fernandes gave way to Rashford in the interim, but United largely followed the moves in the second half as they kept the visitors at bay with forward Anthony Martial having another frustrating evening.
