MANILA, Philippines – Mikey Garcia appears to have emerged as a favorite to be Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent.

According to Garcia, the time and place of the fight could be known in the coming days.

“We are finalizing all the details. We hope to get the exact date and location in the next few days. We’re trying to do everything for May, ”Garcia recently told reporter Jo Ankier, posted on

“It’s been going on for a long time, especially in more detail last year. Now, over the last few weeks, we’ve been getting closer to working on it and finalizing it. I’m pretty excited. We will have all the details defined in the coming days. It’s a question of time. So far, it seems like all parties are in agreement. I am delighted. “

Garcia, a four-division champion, has long been seen as a potential foe for Pacquiao, who had been out of the ring since winning the WBA (Super) welterweight title from Keith Thurman in July 2019.

Last month, Pacquiao’s expected ring return seemed to point to an intriguing match with undefeated phenomenon Ryan Garcia.

But talks broke down with Ryan Garcia on Tuesday, announcing on social media that his dream fight with Pacquiao “isn’t happening right now” after “some issues” unexpectedly surfaced.

Mikey added that his clash with the Filipino ring icon was “almost ready” before the pandemic got in the way.

“It’s a big fight. I think it’s great for my career and for the fans. It’s very exciting for boxing in general to see this type of fight, ”said Mikey (40-1, 30 KOs).

“We’ve been working on it for years. We were almost ready for this before COVID-19 happened. Now it looks like things are back on track. Now, sharing the ring with a living legend like Manny does amazing things for my career, ”he added.

The 33-year-old last fought Jessie Vargas, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in February 2020.

“I just hope the fans enjoy this. It’s not very often that you see two of the greatest fighters go head to head. Right now, that’s what we’re about to do. I am about to face a legend.
