Basketball veteran and two-time silver medalist Pau Gasol was on Spain’s pre-list for the Tokyo Olympics, the Spanish federation announced on Saturday, giving the 40-year-old a new lean to glory.
The pivot is named among 18 who will be aiming for a medal in Japan after Sergio Scariolo’s “Roja” squad are reduced to 12.
Although in the twilight of his career, Pasol, who turns 41 on July 6, won the Spanish league with Barcelona in midweek after nearly two seasons sidelined with an ankle injury that put end to his hopes of extending a long NBA adventure. which notably saw him win two titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.
He now hopes to compete in his fourth Olympics after silver medals in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012 and a bronze medal in Rio in 2016.
“We all got to see how big an effort he has made to be useful to his club and bring something to the table and he has become an increasingly important player,” said Scariolo explaining his decision to take Gasol in his 18, a list that includes Brother Marc Gasol.
After the team’s meeting on June 25 in Madrid, the Spaniards will finalize the preparations with a meeting on July 18 in Las Vegas against the United States from where they will fly to Japan for an opening match against the United States. hosts on July 26.
